Although it is made of shiny metal that appears to be very sturdy, it is extremely easy to bend and break.

There are several common problems that occur with flutes and they are all related to improper care, whether intentional or not.

Here are some important tips that will help any flutist correctly assemble and disassemble their instrument without even a hint of damage.

First, note which direction the case should sit when opening it. An upside down case is a flute disaster in waiting.

Next, know that you will get fingerprints on the flute. It’s inevitable. Don’t stress. These can be easily wiped off with an appropriate cloth later.

Because of the quick tarnishing effect of a flute, owners must put them away in their cases every day. This means the flute will be put together and taken apart many, many times in any given year.

When properly assembling and disassembling the flute, it is a simple thing to say, “Do not grab the keys.” These keys are extremely easy to bend, and it is probably the easiest way to put the instrument out of alignment. Perfect alignment is imperative because the pads under the keys need to seal off any air from leaking through the key holes.

Most players are unaware that they are daily pushing, shoving, or twisting their flute to a state of “need to go to the repair shop” doom.

Pick up the body of the flute from its ends, not the middle where the mechanism and keys are. Hold the body in your left hand from its top (where there are no keys) and use your right hand to carefully twist the head joint on.

You probably have no idea that the joints of the flute are tapered just a slight bit. This is what enables the tight fit. Pieces that are secured properly do not leak air. Leaking air is what can make your tone unclear and fuzzy. Do not push the head joint in all the way. Flutes are made to be set out a few millimeters or even a centimeter depending on a certain tuning.

Continue holding the flute from the top of the body (where the logo usually is) with one hand while you take the foot joint in your other hand from its end, and carefully twist it into place.

Careful not to cross thread this piece. A stuck foot joint is a nightmare to fix and can only be remedied properly by a skilled technician. Avoid cross threading by feeling a comfortable sliding feeling when twisting the piece into place. Never push the foot joint straight on. This will cause the joint to stretch over time, and the pieces will become loose and fall off involuntarily.

Historians believe that flutes made from animal bones over 37,000 years ago are among the first devices to make music. It’s not sure when exactly the first musical instrument was made, but it is known that music has been a part of all cultures, past and present. There are so many different musical instruments, but they can basically be broken down into four main categories.

One category is string instruments. These types all have one thing in common, their sound is made by vibrating strings.The strings can have varying thickness, weight, length, and tension. They can be made out of metal and other synthetic and natural materials. The heavier and longer the string is the deeper the pitch will be because the string will vibrate slower, and vice versa for short, light strings. For example, in pianos and harps the strings are all different lengths, but for guitars, violins, and such, the musician presses on the string at different intervals to shorten it.

The category of strings can also be subdivided by how the strings are made to vibrate. Strings can be plucked, like on guitars, harps, and other similar ones. The violin, cello, bass, and others, use a bow to make the strings vibrate. For the piano, the musician presses a key, which activates a hammer to strike a string and make the sound.

Another category is the wind instruments. In this category, all of these types make sound from air vibrating in a tube or pipe. The frequency of air vibration depends on the size of the tube. Therefore, the larger the tube, the deeper the sound. Most of these types have many valves, or holes, on the tube that must be covered or uncovered to change the sound pitch. Also, many of these use a reed on the mouthpiece. The reed starts to vibrate when blown on and it then sends the vibration through the rest of the chamber.

The next category is brass instruments. These are named as such, well basically because they’re made of brass. Just like the wind category, the pitch is related to the size of the air chamber. Often the tubes on these types are coiled so that the length of the pipe can be longer without making the instrument outrageously long. Valves are used to change the air path, changing the length of the air chamber. However, these only have three valves so pitch is largely controlled by the mouthpiece and musician’s lips. The position of the mouth on the mouthpiece and the tightness of the lips are how the pitch is changed.

Some brass types don’t have valves, like the bugle, so pitch is controlled solely by the mouth. This is also the case with the trombone, however it has what is called a slide. It’s a long movable tube which can slide back and forth changing the air chamber size, consequently changing the pitch.

The last category is percussion. This is perhaps the biggest group as there are many different types. They are played by being hit or shaken. They can be hit with a stick, a hand, or against themselves. Different sorts of materials used for different types make different sounds. The thickness or size of the material can make different sounds, too.

These four categories are based on the process, system, and mechanism of how each instrument produces its sound. Have you ever heard these words? “You are flat”, or “You are playing very sharp”. Do you know what to do about it? There are several different things that need to be in order for your flute to be in tune.

First, you need to know what you are tuning to. If you are attempting to tune your flute to an electronic tuner, make sure it is set at A-440 (440kz). This is the measurement of how many vibrations happen per second. Most players should tune to A-440. Then you’ll need to understand the rest of this article to make sure that you know how to play in-tune.

Second, you need to double check your cork position inside your head joint. To do this you’ll need to use your tuning/cleaning rod. Take your head joint apart from the rest of the flute and insert the tuning side of the rod into the bottom of your flute until it touches the end up by the tone hole. There is a mark carved into the tuning rod roughly 17mm from the end. Peek through your tone hole and you should see it right smack-dab in the middle. If it is closer to the top or bottom of your head joint you know you have a problem with the position of your cork. I you can remember to not disturb the cap and cork at the top of your head joint you may never have to check its position for years.

Third, you’ll need to know how far in or out to adjust your flute head joint when assembling it to the body of the flute. Understanding that the longer the flute is, the lower the pitch will be, is important to completing this step. A piccolo plays a much higher pitch than a long and fat bass flute does which gives an easy visual to this concept. This is probably the most common place a flutist will adjust their flute when first tuning his/her flute on a daily basis.

Once you have determined that you are flat or sharp, you’ll need to adjust your flute accordingly. If you are sharp, pull the head joint out farther away from the body of the flute. The opposite is also true. If you are flat you’ll need to push the head joint in a bit.

Modern flutes are not made to have the head joints pushed all the way into the body. Because you will be moving the head joint in and out often when fine-tuning your flute, you’ll notice that this bottom section of the head joint will be less shiny and more tarnished-looking than the rest of the flute. This is okay and very normal. Flute maker’s assume that the flute will be pulled out anywhere from 3mm to as much as 20mm or more depending on the player, temperature, and brand of flute. This is a neat feature of modern flutes since they are able to tune to pianos in freezing temperatures or guitars on a warm summer day.

Fourth, players must also learn how to roll their lip-plate either towards their face or away from it. While blowing any note, you can notice that the pitch drops dramatically when the head joint is rolled in more than when it is out and facing into the room. This is a great way to fine-tune your pitch. For example; rolling in will lower your pitch (make it flatter).

Knowing these four areas of pitch adjustment, a player can now begin to work on their skill of finding perfect pitch on certain notes. It takes quite a bit of practice to make it automatic and easy, but most players who listen carefully can get pretty close within not too long.
