Le Corsaire and The American Ballet Theatre

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I was privileged to be able to purchase the DVD of Le Corsaire with the American Ballet Theatre’s stars dancing. I spent a lazy Saturday afternoon curled up on the couch and thoroughly enjoyed watching Le Corsaire for the first time.

I didn’t realize just how complex the story was, and my only experience of the ballet was watching snippets of Fonteyn and Nureyev dancing extracts from the second scene. Le Corsaire is fast and exciting and is about slavery and pirates. The DVD starts with the dancers giving an account according to them on the story of the ballet.

The first performance of Adam’s Le Corsaire was at the Paris Opera on the 23rd of January 1856. It was well received for its ‘outstanding dancing-mimetic embodiment of leading roles and the perfect meshing of stage set, choreography and music.’ The elaborate final scene was a hit.

A romantic poem that was published in 1814 was the inspiration for Le Corsaire. Hector Berloiz got his inspiration from the poem to create his concert overture for the ballet. Between Librettist Jules-Henri de Saint George and choreographer Joseph Mazilier, who became the first ballet master at the Paris Opera in 1853, they turned the poem into a wonderful ballet. They had opulent stage sets and grand theatrical illusionary effects supported by Adam’s music which all contributed to the great success of the world premier of Le Corsaire.

The high society of the Second Empire Paris visited the performances of Le Corsaire just to see Victor Sacre, who was the opera’s head machinist, stage the dramatic sinking of the pirate ship in a turbulent storm at sea.

The original backdrops and costumes were all destroyed in a fire. The Paris Opera staged a new production under the direction of Mazilier in 1867. In this performance a series of pieces of music by other composers were added as lasting supplements to Adam’s original score.

In 1899 Marius Petipa broke completely with the original Paris production’s material and subjected Le Ciorsaire to the forms of dance expression of the classical Russian school.

The American Ballet Theatre is one of the world’s leading dance companies. It was founded In 1940 and has been a guest at all the significant dance festivals across the globe. Every year the American Ballet Theatre tours through America and reaches audiences of more than 600 000. This Company is one of the few American cultural institutions to receive subsidies from the United States Department of State.

The A.B.T. performs mainly at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. A.B.T. also runs it’s own ballet school. Soloist, Kevin McKenzie, has been at the helm of the famous company since 1992. Under his direction the American Ballet Theatre celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of its founding with a series of gala performances in the year 2000.

American Ballet Theatres performance of Le Corsaire is nothing short of brilliant and is performed by well known dancers Angel Corella, Joaquin De Luz, Paloma Herrera, Julie Kent, Vladimir Malakhov and Ethan Stifel. You may remember Julie and Ethan from the movie Center Stage.

It was wonderful to see so many brilliant dancers on the stage at one time all performing principle roles of some sort In Le Corsaire.

Ballet Dancing is a wonderful profession and passtime for Michel Maling. Visit her blog at http://balletdancing4u.blogspot.com

Best Publicity Stunts Driven by Jungian Archetype

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

William and Anais Yeager are two brilliant filmmakers, who embody the Jungian archetype of the trickster. They surely know how to use archetype to promote their filmmaking business. CNN reported that over the week of January 23, 2011 they claimed credit for putting the piano on the sandbar in Florida, and effectively produced one of the best publicity stunts ever accomplished to garner millions of dollars worth of free publicity from CNN and many other media outlets. CNN produced a 2.5-minute report that would probably have cost the Yeagers up to $100,000 if they had produced it themselves, complete with helicopter aerial shots and clips of famous movies. CNN later reported, not in the video report, that 16-year-old Nicholas Harrington, not affiliated with the Yeagers, has now stepped forward to say that he was the prankster. It seems he did not want someone else to take the credit.

The Yeager claim may be just an example of publicity opportunism, since they didn’t even have to move the piano to get the publicity. They saw the archetypal potential of the situation! One wonders whether CNN will ever again believe a Yeager claim.

The CNN report even contains a plug for their independent film to be released at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 called “Jesus of Malibu: The Revolution for the Freedom of the Mind.” In fact, now that I think about it, they have even gotten me to write about it in this very article, which will be seen around the world. What a brilliant stroke! That piano on a sandbar will now forever be an archetypal symbol for the Yeager’s movie and top publicity stunts of all time. Sadly for young Mr. Harrington, it seems unlikely that anyone will remember that he was the actual idea man.

Considering Jungian Archetypes and how they were used in this stunt and the reporting around it is a very rich experience indeed. First we have the incongruous image of the piano sitting on a sandbar. This image made us think about many other archetypal symbols, including the saloon of the Titanic at the bottom of the sea; Ingrid Bergman saying, “Play it again Sam” in “Casablanca”; Michelle Pfeiffer’s archetypal rendition of “Makin’ Whoopee” in “The Fabulous Baker Boys”; and Harvey Keitel dragging Holly Hunter’s piano off the beach in “The Piano” from 1993.

The caption contest that materialized in the local newspaper brought in such quips as “you can tune a piano but you can’t tuna fish” and “play it again sand.” It seems as though most people who have seen these reports couldn’t help but be drawn in by the fun, including me!

The Yeagers have provided us with a superb example of how to get publicity by using archetype. We often write about how an archetypal story or painting will engage generations of fans. We rarely talk about how archetype is used to attract publicity, for better or worse.

Unfortunately, last year’s best publicity stunt was probably the pastor who threatened to burn Korans as a means of revitalizing his failing church. The potential global disaster he caused by his archetypal antics nearly released the kinds of evil that were gently portrayed in Walt Disney’s 1940 animated film, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” in which Mickey Mouse is nearly overwhelmed by unexpected evil.

Skip Conover is an International Executive, Author, and Artist. He started studying the work of Carl G. Jung in the mid-1980s, and applied Jungian Archetype in his writing and paintings since 1993. He is the Founder of the Archetype in Action Organization.

Bootleg Movies: Are Free Online Movies Legal Or Not?

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Bootleg movies are either waxing or waning in popularity depending upon who you believe. So what is the truth – are free online movies legal and are they increasing or decreasing in popularity? The answer is . . . (not ‘wax on – wax off’ – that’s another movie). . .

It depends who you believe and who you want to believe! If you are a movie producer or own a recording studio, bootleg movies are on the wane, but if you are one of those that sail close to the wind where copyright law is concerned, then it is on the wax – a very slippery situation indeed! Do you even understand the meaning of these terms? Not wax and wane, but ‘bootleg movies’ and ‘online movie downloads?’

Wane means to reduce and wax to put you on a slippery slope, but a bootleg movie is a bootleg movie – no getting away from it! But more – it is downright illegal, and illegal movie downloads attract a hefty punishment. More than a traffic offence, because you are upsetting the big guys! Also, since the file sharing software used for free online movies can also be used to download music online, then the music guys are also getting involved.

You are on a sticky wicket, as the Brits say, which means you are in a hazardous and potentially disastrous situation if you are caught downloading bootleg movies onto your hard disk. Or anywhere – your soft and floppy or wherever! It’s just not cricket guys!

All copyright-protected material is legally protected against unauthorized use in any way unless by agreement with the originator – in the case of movies, generally the studio (e.g. MGM) and in the case of music, the recording studio and also the songwriter and artist. It’s funny how many performers are also great artists! I wonder what Leonardo played?

So the answer to the question ‘are free online movies legal or not’: if they are protected by copyright they cannot be downloaded without authorization. Bootleg movies are illegal by the definition of the term! You needn’t even ask the question! So ask another question: In spite of that, do people still download bootleg movies and get free music online from file sharing software?

Yes they do! And it cannot be condoned. You should try to avoid downloading music and movies that are protected by copyright. However, there is one teensy-weensy problem. How do you know if a track of music or a movie is copyright-protected and not in the public domain or being offered free by the owner?

The answer is that it is not easy to find that out – although if it has recently been in the charts – music or movie – then it is likely to be still protected. Recent means about 60 years in the music and movie industry, because rather than use technology to prevent unauthorized downloading, they have found it more lucrative to fine those that break the law in this way. Maybe also they don’t have a clue how to copy-protect a media file! That wouldn’t be too surprising.

What’s the way they suggest you avoid breaking the law? Yep, you got it! Download nothing unless you pay for it. In fact, most download sites that offer realistic download speeds charge a membership fee – sometimes 1 year, sometimes 2 years and often a lifetime membership (a bit like the penalties for doing it!): meaning you can use the software for the rest of your life to download bootleg movies and illegal-to-download music tracks (the same software does both).

So don’t do it: it is illegal, in fact highly illegal. I like that term – ‘Highly Illegal’ as if there were levels of illegality – not quite illegal, just about illegal, pretty illegal, definitely illegal, highly illegal and ‘chop your head off’ illegal. Alice and Wonderland stuff!

So here’s the scoop guys – if it’s illegal to download bootleg movies don’t do it. Are free online movies legal or not? Stop asking that – yes they are, but just a bit, and quite a lot for the Chinese that copy more than you do! So stop it and pay through the nose for your legal bootleg movies.

More information on the legality of downloading bootleg movies which is pretty illegal, can be found on Pete’s website Online Free Movies where you find free online movies that are quite over-average illegal.

Guitar Throwing Video

Friday, April 9th, 2010

This song is by an artist who had an expensive guitar damaged by the airlines baggage handling staff. There are many stories in the industry about this sort of thing, some with happier endings. This video dramatizes the situation, but the story behind the video is probably a real life experience.

YouTube Video of ‘What a Wonderful World’

The production on this video is very good. The lipsync seems to be right on, and the playing in the genre is also good. I felt that the quality of the product deserved exposure on the site so I have embedded the player here. If you don’t like death metal or don’t, at least, have an open mind you may wish to pass on viewing this video.

HBO Makes Cable and Satellite TV Worth Every Penny

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

by Jon Jacobson

HDTV

There’s a reason why HBO series and miniseries have been raking in Emmy’s and Golden Globes like a landscaper with leaves during the peak of autumn. It’s just plain good television. From classics like Sex and the City to brand new series like Bored to Death, it’s safe to say that you wouldn’t need someone to physically tie you down to sit in front of a television set on HBO all day. For the sake of watching the following shows (listed in no particular order of greatness), an upgrade to cable or satellite TV is highly recommended:

Curb Your Enthusiasm:
Brainchild of Seinfeld co-writer and producer, Larry David, this offbeat comedy invites you to laugh at David’s exaggerated portrayal of his own life. The show centers around David’s neuroticism and the way it constantly puts him at odds with social convention. If you like Seinfeld, then don’t miss Larry David as George Costanza come to life.

Bored to Death:
Jason Schwartzman plays the part of Jonathan Ames, an in-between-books novelist who just got broken up with due to his drinking habits, has terrible writer’s block in regards to his second book, and is in a word, lost. Instead of picking up the broken pieces of his life, Jonathan decides to do something entirely different and turns to moonlighting as an unlicensed private detective.

True Blood:
Ever since synthetic blood hit supermarket shelves, vampires went from mythical monsters of the underground to next door neighbors overnight. Even though they are no longer a threat to humankind, some lingering skepticism remains in certain religious circles and political parties. The show follows the rocky integration of vampires into society in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, starring Anna Paquin as Sookie.

HBO – For Great Programming!

Sex and the City:
Although the series finished up years ago, its celebrated popularity makes it remain a fixture on the station. The show follows the life of New York City columnist, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) as she explores the Manhattan dating scene. Carrie and her three girlfriends live a lavish lifestyle that women all across the country love to live vicariously through.

CableMan

Entourage:
Sometimes compared to Sex in the City in that it’s the male fantasy lifestyle, Entourage is based on producer Mark Wahlberg’s early life as a celebrity. Complete with beautiful women, fancy sports cars, HDTVs and a mansion, Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) seems to have it all. The show follows the life of Vince, his brother and the friends he supports on his actor’s wages as they live the high life.

And these are just the tip of the iceberg based on the most popular choices. No matter what your tastes are, HBO will surely have something to satisfy them. From drama to comedy to documentaries, this premium channel is sure to deliver it all and at the quality the title “premium” suggests. If ever you needed an excuse to upgrade to cable or satellite TV, HBO is it.
